President's
Message
Hello Dancers!
February we tried something new and had our monthly dance at Forest
Recreation Center and we had a great turnout! We decorated the
facility with a Mardi Gras theme with masks, beads, and colorful
tables. THANK YOU
BRUCE!! We had a terrific waltz lesson by Jose followed by
social dancing with LOTS OF ROOM! The floor was dusty from
renovations to the facility so I will provide a shoe brush for those of
you with dance shoes to clean your shoes when you are ready to leave
the facility. Just ask me if you don't see the brush out.
Lots of dust in suade soles can make your shoes feel slippery as well
as track dust to the next dance :(
We met our expences! YEAH!!
Bedford Parks and Rec will be co-sponsoring our dances at Forest
Recreation Center. We have a deal worked out that I think will be
a win-win for us all. To continue to bring quality lessons and
fun dances, please continue to come support these events and bring your
friends!
Oh, and the Forest Rec Center looks great these days! New
ceiling, new bathrooms that do not smell, new paint, and new light
fixtures/ceiling fans. We
may be asked to do a special fund-raiser dance help raise $$ for a
wooden floor. Bedford Parks and Rec would like to have a
multi-purpose wooden floor to cover part if not all of the floor.
So if you have some ideas, please share them! We would all love
the extra cushion of a wooden floor.
Thanks to all who stayed to help clean up. The tables are bigger and
clean-up takes a little longer, but with all the helpers it goes by
quickly. I appreciate it so
much.

Chapter
News
Greetings
Dancers,
A few updates on the SML Dance chapter.
Well
our membership seems to have stabilized at around 35 members. I
have to give a big thanks to former members who "did the math".
These folks found if they were non-members, the club gets more money
per year from them yet these non-members attend our events
and act like members!
An
advantage of being a
member is getting the dance magazine every other month from National
and the chapter gets $5.00 back per dues paid. I will say though
that the dance magazine has shifted focus over the past several years
from social dancing to competition dancing.
We need tablecloths.
Please stop by the dollar store and purchase one or two and donate to
the club. The plastic ones cost a buck a piece and are intended
to be single use. I cleaned out the SML cabinet and you would not
believe the amount of food and goo that inadvertantly got folded up and
placed back in the drawer.
If anyone is handy with sewing and wants to cut up some sheets to make
into tablecloths, I don't mind laundering them. The desired
number is 8.
AND,
we are going to have 4 dances that are EXTRA DANCES at the ELKS LODGE
in Lynchburg. The dates are January 29, April 30, July 30, and
October 29th. No lessons. Costs are the same, $7 member and
$10 nonmember. We call these dances the "5th Friday Dances".
The BOD has not forgotten the
requests for a 2-step workshop and the interest expressed in a
contra-dance.
The VHS library is SLOWLY
being converted to DVDs. About 1/3 of the VHS tapes now have a
DVD duplicate. The check-out fee is $10 per tape/disc and it is
refunded upon return of the tape/disc. Thanks to Don for donating
his time and disks to make this happen.
Our
current officers are:
President-Cindy Zerfoss
Vice President-Betty Paul
Secretary-Bruce Paul
Treasurer-Cheryl Borland
We have 2 openings for the board of directors. If you are
interested in volunteering some time and ideas, please let me
know. We have meetings 2-3 times a year to plan events and
address specific issues.
Silent auction time?
Last May we had a silent auction at our Moneta dance that was a lot of
fun and did raise some money for our chapter to offset expenses for
lessons. Our May dance will be at Forest Recreation Center and
there is a ton of space. Give it some thought and we can decide
by April if we want to have another one. We do have some very
talented members and I am the proud owner of one of Norma's glass
necklaces.
Our
chapter is on Facebook and has a few friends. Events are also
posted there for those who are FB regulars.
If
you are not getting emails from me with additional dance events, please
contact me and I will add you to the list.

Ways
to help our chapter.
VOLUNTEER!
We can always use set-up and clean-up
assistance.
Feel
free to bring new music to share.
Offer
to take money and greet members and guests at the dances.
I
can always use help with printing info for sharing! If
interested, just let me know and I will send you info via email to
print.
News
and web mantenence with the newsletter/web site would be very much
appreciated as well!!
Regarding
the web site:
Our
son has hosted this for us for several years FREE as a service to
MOM. Since this is a free service, space is limited and graphics
are kept at a minimum. This has saved us about $50.00 per year in
expenses.

...........................................
Our fees:
members $7.00 person
non-members $10.00 person
students $5.00 person
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Have you noticed all the commercials on television with dancing in the
background? Or specific reference on how dancing is good for you?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
What benefits do you
get by dancing with the chapter? There is liability insurance in
the event you are injured at the dance. Members get a dancer
magazine every other month that contains excellent information about
dance, from social dancing to competitive dancing. You get a
discount at ANY USA DANCE event across the nation. When you join
or renew, our chapter gets a portion of the membership fee back to help
with operating costs. Please renew if you are up for
renewal. If you move or if we don't succeed as a chapter, your
membership can be transferred to any other chapter. IF YOU DON'T
PLAN TO RENEW, PLEASE LET NATIONAL KNOW SO WE DON'T GET "DINGED" FOR
NON-RENEWALS.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
How does dancing
benefit you? Its fun! You get a terrific workout when you
dance. Dancing will help you get stronger, inprove your
endurance, balance and flexibility. You can dance alone or with a
partner. As with any other form of exercise though, take a moment
to stretch and warm up before strenous dancing!
