President's
Message
Greetings Dancers!!
2010 has been quite a year so far for our chapter. We continued
to have monthly dances and meet our expenses so far this year.
Our attendance at the Forest Recreation Center exceeds the attendance
at Moneta Community Center so when the board of directors met in June,
the decision was made to keep the dances in Forest for now.
Bedford Parks and Recreation has worked with us to provide affordable
rent and many of you have enjoyed the additional space.
We have tried 2 new things so far this year. We held a first "5th
Friday" dance in April at the Elks lodge in Lynchburg. We held a
lesson/dance in the dining room. While the room is quite charming
and the floor comfortable to dance on, it was a bit small when 8
couples were on the dance floor at the same time. Additionally,
there was a strong smoke smell that many did not like getting into hair
and clothing. So the decision was made to not continue with the
"5th Friday" extra dance at the Elks.
Our second adventure this year was to have a 5th Friday at Carole Riggs
Studio (Mel's) since Jose was out of town on our regular 3rd Friday
lesson/dance. We had excellent attendance at Mel's and all looked
to have a great time. The floor is smaller but large enough to
accommodate 50 people for a latin lesson. FINALLY, the single
woman had a chance to dance. Thanks
to you all for sharing your partners and giving the singles the
floor! AND thank you Mel
for working with us on a great rental deal and being such a gracious
host!
Please help get the word out about our dances. My email list is
about 150 or so, and does overlap with Mel's list and with Dave/Donna's
list. Please feel free to share any info you get from our chapter with
your friends and co-workers.
I want to thank all who have helped set-up and clean-up at Forest Rec
Center for May and June. As you know, it really does not take
much time if 4-5 people work together.
There is a new SWING-LINDY club in Lynchburg and they meet weekly on
Kemper St. in downtown Lynchburg. They will resume their weekly
schedule early next month. Check out their website. AND
CHECK OUT THEIR DANCING!
Now about the music............Just when I hit a good combination of
songs that most enjoyed, not too fast, not too slow, not to old, not to
modern, strict tempo (mostly), USA DANCE goes and changes the
rules!! Music companies ASCAP and BMI want to ensure that
royalities are paid when we play any of their songs at any USA Dance
events. National USA Dance has signed an agreement to cover
licensing fees for THEIR SONGS ONLY. Therefore we are asked to
play only songs on the BMI listing or risk consequences if other music
companies find out and ask for their royalities. Soooooooo, I need your help! If you have a
favorite song, please check this website and see if its licensed by
BMI. If so, please send me the song and I can add it to my
approved list. It may take a few months to get a good variety of
music but we really don't have much choice!! We do have the BMI
CDs of music from National from several years ago that we can
play. At that time, many of you did not care for the CDs!
So please do help me come up with more variety of dance tunes. Here is
the link to check.

Unfortunately the specialty
dance CDs (Rumbas, Tangos etc) ARE NOT licensed by BMI. So our
choices are limited!!!!!!

Chapter
News
Greetings
Dancers,
A few updates on the SML Dance chapter.
Well
our membership has decreased to 27. I haven't checked this month
to see if the delinquent folks renewed. The good thing is we have
the same dancers attending, they just are not members.
An
advantage of being a
member is getting the dance magazine every other month from National
and the chapter gets $5.00 back per dues paid. And you get a
discount at any USA Dance sponsored event.
We need tablecloths.
Please stop by the dollar store and purchase one or two and donate to
the club. The plastic ones cost a buck a piece and are intended
to be single use. EVERYONE
goes to the grocery store so please do pick us up a tablecloth to
replace the torn ones. ANY color will do!!
It
does not look like we are going to have a workshop this summer. I
was unable to get a location on a Sat during the summer months that we
could afford to rent. But who knows, maybe the fall or winter
will bring a workshop!
The VHS library is SLOWLY
being converted to DVDs. About 1/3 of the VHS tapes now have a
DVD duplicate. The check-out fee is $10 per tape/disc and it is
refunded upon return of the tape/disc. Thanks to Don for donating
his time and disks to make this happen.
Our
current officers are:
President-Cindy Zerfoss
Vice President-Betty Paul
Secretary-Bruce Paul
Treasurer-Cheryl Borland
Cheryl,
Bruce and Betty are resigning after this year. SOOOOO, I need 3
people who are willing to serve as officers for the next year.
Elections are in November so please do give this some thought. We
cannot continue as a club without a full slate of officers.
We have 3 openings for the board of directors. If you are
interested in volunteering some time and ideas, please let me
know. We have meetings 2-3 times a year to plan events and
address specific issues.
September 17-24th is National Ballroom
Dance Week. Please mark your calendars now and plan to
attend. Come want members demonstrate their favorite social or
competitive dance routines.
Our
chapter is on Facebook and has a few friends. Events are also
posted there for those who are FB regulars. Its under "SMITH
MOUNTAIN LAKE".
If
you are not getting emails from me with additional dance events, please
contact me and I will add you to the list.
Cindy

Ways
to help our chapter.
VOLUNTEER!
We can always use set-up and clean-up
assistance.
Feel
free to bring new music to share.
Offer
to take money and greet members and guests at the dances.
I
can always use help with printing info for sharing! If
interested, just let me know and I will send you info via email to
print.
News
and web mantenence with the newsletter/web site would be very much
appreciated as well!!
Regarding
the web site:
Our
son has hosted this for us for several years FREE as a service to
MOM. Since this is a free service, space is limited and graphics
are kept at a minimum. This has saved us about $50.00 per year in
expenses.
|
...........................................
Our fees:
members $7.00 person
non-members $10.00 person
students $5.00 person
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
What benefits do you
get by dancing with the chapter? There is liability insurance in
the event you are injured at the dance. Members get a dancer
magazine every other month that contains excellent information about
dance, from social dancing to competitive dancing. You get a
discount at ANY USA DANCE event across the nation. When you join
or renew, our chapter gets a portion of the membership fee back to help
with operating costs. Please renew if you are up for
renewal. If you move or if we don't succeed as a chapter, your
membership can be transferred to any other chapter. IF YOU DON'T
PLAN TO RENEW, PLEASE LET NATIONAL KNOW SO WE DON'T GET "DINGED" FOR
NON-RENEWALS.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
How does dancing
benefit you? Its fun! You get a terrific workout when you
dance. Dancing will help you get stronger, inprove your
endurance, balance and flexibility. You can dance alone or with a
partner. As with any other form of exercise though, take a moment
to stretch and warm up before strenous dancing!
